We may have every intention of not overdoing it at Christmas, but let’s face it – with all the rich, indulgent food that’s served up over the festive period, it’s highly likely that by Christmas Day you’re slumped on the sofa in a pair of loose-fitting joggers with a stomach so round you’d probably be offered a seat on a bus.
For many of us, this is the time of year to switch off, catch up with family and friends, crack open a few bottles of bubbly and sample lots of moreish seasonal foods.
Tasty they may be, but these foods can irritate the digestive system and gut, contribute to bloating, acid reflux, trapped wind, constipation, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. It can also trigger symptoms of IBS and skin flare-ups, especially eczema, psoriasis and rosacea – none of which you want at a time when you’re supposed to be relaxing and enjoying yourself.
So … how can we eat, drink and still be merry?
There are plenty of strategies that go a long way to lessen the damage you do to your tummy over the festive season – I’m sure you know what constitutes a sensible approach: stay as active as possible, take long walks between the big meals, drink plenty of water, sip on herbal teas, resist the urge to not pile your plate sky high with all the starchy foods, choose your indulgences wisely (one mince pie, a couple of chocolates from the box…) and watch your stress levels.
But in truth, how many of us are really as mindful as we should be?
We’re all entitled to let our hair down once in a while, which is why I developed my Just For Tummies Seasonal Survival Kit – to ‘trouble-proof’ your tummy so that you can get through the silly season with your health intact.

Which supplements does the Seasonal Survival Kit contain – and how do they work?
Giving your gut flora a helping hand is an absolute must ahead of all the Christmas excesses. Taking a multi-strain probiotic daily over the festive period will boost levels of ‘friendly’ bacteria and restore digestive balance.
As well as improving digestive and gut function, Live Bacteria probiotics also go a long way towards boosting our immunity and reducing colds and flu, and the need for antibiotics; preventing and treating urinary tract infections; helping to reduce the symptoms of IBS; helping to heal inflammatory bowel conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis; and managing and preventing skin conditions. You’ll wonder how your tummy ever managed without them!
Taken before eating, Digestive Enzymes are plant-derived supplements offer fantastic support to your digestive system as they help break down food more efficiently, reducing the effects of bloating, gas, indigestion and heartburn.
Not a bad idea when you think about what we put our poor tummies through over the festive season.
While there are plenty of occasions when we overindulge throughout the year, it’s probably the festive season when Milk Thistle really comes into its own.
For symptoms such as reducing a hangover, indigestion and upset stomach, silymarin – the active ingredient in my Milk Thistle tablets – will promote healthy digestive function and offer fantastic liver support, helping to break down alcohol in the liver, and helping to rebuild cells while removing toxins from the body – that includes naturally reversing the harmful effects of alcohol when you’ve had one too many. Don’t start any party without your Milk Thistle!
One of the easiest ways to soothe an overburdened belly comes in the form of a cup of my Just For Tummies Tummy Tea.
It’s a lovely, hand-blended herbal infusion of healing and soothing herbs made in the Wield of Kent and traditionally used to calm and support the digestive system. Containing liquorice root, ginger root, fennel seed, carom seed, cardamom seed, fenugreek seed and black peppercorns, this is a truly ‘feel-good’ cuppa that can be enjoyed as a tonic for the tummy to get food and trapped gas moving through the digestive system, thereby reducing bloating and painful cramping. A soothing drink before bedtime too, to help you sleep.
Nobody wants to be too strict with themselves over Christmas. But by taking a few precautions you can still enjoy yourself, without the unpleasant side effects.
