My journey: from dreamer to haircare guru

Follow your dreams. Easy to say. And turning your vision into a reality is satisfying, rewarding and life changing. But it’s also hard work, challenging and sometimes seemingly impossible.

Because for the last five years I’ve been doing just that – turning my vision of a haircare product for women that gives gorgeous, frizz-free curls and healthy hair into a real, actual range. It’s beyond exciting, and all my hard work and efforts are paying off.

My story is really inspired by my mum. As a single mother to three girls she didn’t have much money, so instead of hair products she used to put fabric conditioner on our hair to keep it tangle free.

Sounds strange, I know. But after I had my own daughter, Scarlette-Maya, I realised that there simply weren’t the right products that stopped her hair feeling dry, unhealthy and frizzy. She hated hairwash times and I’d end up tugging the comb through her knotty hair, feeling awful the whole time.

And that’s when I came up with the idea for Maya. It was about seeing a gap in the market and figuring out how to fill it. I’d been buying all kinds of products and blending them together to no avail, and I realised I needed to create a brand new product from scratch.

Getting the idea off the ground

Michelle in the papersBut where to begin? It’s one thing to have an idea, but something else entirely to actually make it happen. I had to do tons of research and experiments – essentially I had to turn myself into a scientist! Figuring out the right blend of natural essential oils took time and a whole lot of patience. I found myself working with formulations specialists and manufacturers, learning the process as I went along.

And it was arduous sometimes to say the least. My mum passed away shortly after I came up with the idea, which hit me very hard and I put things on hold for a while. Plus I was training to be a teacher at the same time.

So there’s a lot of juggling and it could have been very easy to think ‘Why bother?’ But I never gave up, and I now have a physical product to sell. It contains a blend of 12 natural oils, ethically sourced and produced, which is important to me.

I’m celebrating some really great reviews of Maya and it’s getting plenty of attention from the beauty press.

How to stay inspired

My advice to anyone thinking of taking the plunge into making their vision a reality is to be absolutely clear on what you want. Have a dream and hold onto it – this really will drive you.

It’s a leap of faith, too. You need to trust that with enough energy and input from you, things will start to happen. You don’t know who you’ll meet, where the opportunities will come from, what will open up. But it will happen if you strive hard enough.

It’s hugely important to have fun along the way, too. We all need to relax and enjoy ourselves, and living the dream is not just about the end result, it’s about how you get there. So be passionate about what you’re doing, smile and have fun and you’ll soon notice others are joining you.

Above all, never give in. Hang in there even when it feels tough. After all, I’m living proof that persistence pays off…
