Let’s keep the menopause discussion going

As our current crop of favourite stars grow older, the benefit is that many of them are opening up about menopause.

This is great news for all the women currently going through this phase of life, as it means that we can now talk freely and openly about the variety of changes going on in our body.

While it may seem that not many people like to talk about it, the fact is that menopause will impact almost every woman at some point in their life. It should not be treated as an off-limits topic; how can it be taboo with over four million menopausal women in the UK?

Lately, more and more celebrities have used their platforms to discuss all the changes, both mental and physical, that come with ‘the change’.  Along with TV presenters Lorraine Kelly and Nadia Sawalha leading discussions about the ‘M’ word, other celebrities have started to follow suit.

Just recently, TV presenter Trisha Goddard said menopause felt like “being thrown at the wall”, while supermodel Yasmin Le Bon mentioned that menopause had left her with “padding”, both emotional and physical.

Pamela Anderson, also opened up about her experience with menopause, which she described as “very emotional”.

“I had empty nest syndrome, all sorts of syndromes. Hormones! Hot flushes! Moods! It was all happening,” she explained to The Daily Mail. She also sought treatment from an Ayurvedic doctor for her symptoms, saying “The moodiness, the tension. Sometimes I am not myself and I realise that I need to manage it a bit better. I don’t wish to torture everybody around me.”

Meg Matthews, is also furthering the conversation. Her column for Red is a detailed, honest look at menopause and her willingness to share her experience with other women is wonderful to witness.

Meg has called menopause “the worst 18 months of [her] life,” and detailed to the Metro how “incredible” it felt to finally understand the simple reason why she felt like “a shadow of her former self”.

Now, she’s started her own website, megsmenopause.com, to break the taboo surrounding midlife, and inspiring other women in similar situations to come together without shame or fear of judgement.

Talking about this natural occurrence is important, and I’m so happy to see that celebrities aren’t afraid to be truthful.

Many only think of menopause as just a physical change: hot flushes, aches and pains, weight gain, headaches, wrinkles and grey hair. But it’s very much a mental change as well. Severe symptoms like panic attacks, mood swings and a complete lack of libido can leave women feeling isolated, frightened, and confused at this life stage.

It’s important to recognise that by voicing our experiences, we could potentially be helping another deal with the difficulties of menopause. Hearing our favourite stars say they’ve gone through the same ups-and-downs is proof that we’re not alone and that our struggles matter.

Let’s continue this menopause discussion going to show that we’re all in this boat together. And get familiar with our science based choices – natural and medical – so that we can be the captain of our journey through the transition we know as menopause.
