As the festive season swings into action, life can become a whirlwind of work and parties.
And the chances are, you’ll have the odd occasion when you have to go straight from the office to a Christmas do, without time to go home in between.
So how do you get over the inevitable dilemma of what to wear? Office clothes aren’t necessarily the perfect partywear, but you still need to make sure you’re smart at work.
Here are my ideas to help you make the smooth transition from desk to dancefloor:
Fabulous footwear. Swap your plain court shoes to a pair of heels before you leave the office, or pick a pair in a bright colour, or with some embellished detail like gems, sequins or bows.
Luscious legs. Most of us wear plain opaque tights for work during the day, so try a finer denier with some pattern for the evening.
To make your legs appear longer, tone your hosiery to match your shoes.
Get the right bag. Change your daytime tote or briefcase for a clutch bag.
My top tip is to hold your bag at whichever part of your torso you want to draw attention to and avoid holding it where you don’t! So if you want to divert eyes away from larger hips, hold your bag under your arm.
Add some accessories. A statement piece of jewellery will immediately give a glamorous edge to any outfit. Try a versatile piece that you can wear during the day and transition to the evening.
Belts are brilliant. Use one to cinch in your waist on a loose daytime dress to add shape and define your curves.
If you’re proud of your waist, try a belt in a contrasting colour to draw attention to it. If you’re not so well defined, choose a belt in a matching tone to your dress as it will be the most flattering.
Cami magic. Wear a camisole under a shirt or with a jacket in the daytime. Then you just need to add an embelleshed cardigan or one in a more luxurious yarn to take you into the evening.
If you really want to dazzle, try a sequinned jacket.
Banish VPL. Never a girl’s best friend! So make sure you’re wearing the right underwear to get a smooth silhouette. Spanx are a great way to beat the bulge and give you shapely contours.
What’s underneath counts. So avoid white underwear, as this will glow under ultraviolet lights. Instead choose nude underwear under light clothes or dark under deeper colours.
Keep it appropriate. You might be going from the office to a work event, so make sure your clothes reflect the occasion. For example, it might not be wise to wear jeans if you wouldn’t in a work environment.
Stay fresh. Carry some mini versions of essentials so you’re not caught unprepared! My three key essentials are: Batiste (from Boots) to give your hair some vavavoom; perfume to spritz if you don’t wear it on a daily basis (or a different scent to your daytime one); and a lipstick.
