If you’ve ever considered a career in HR (Human Resources), you would know that it is a great choice for people who are good at talking to others and want to help out others that they work with. However, there are many things that you should know about this field before you decide to pursue a job or complete your studies in Human Resources. 

1. Dispute resolution skills are a must

Part of being the HR manager usually involves knowing how to resolve workplace disputes when they arise. If you work for a big company, there will often be conflict. HR may need to get involved to prevent things getting out of hand. More often than not, you will have to help people come to an understanding based on an issue that has come to light in the workplace, which can be very difficult. Remembering to stay calm and impartial when you are helping to resolve a workplace conflict is extremely important. Therefore, you need to learn about conflict resolution before you take on a senior role in an HR department. 

2. You will wear many hats

If you are going to work in HR, you need to be prepared to take on a lot of different roles. For example, data entry is a big part of the job. HR workers are often in charge of updating company files on a regular basis, as well as filing reports on employees. You may also be required to talk to employees about their entitlements such as leave. Another thing that HR managers may also need to deal with is the hiring and firing of employees. They will have to do reference checks, monitor employees and have regular meetings with them.

3. Time management is important

As an HR manager, there is always something to do, so you need to know how to manage your time effectively.  You will likely have a constant stream of little jobs that need to be completed throughout the day rather than one long, consistent project. You may have to juggle a few different tasks at once, because you will often have to accommodate others and work to their schedule. But if you are good at managing your time and changing your focus quickly, you should find that a job in HR will be more geared towards someone who works the way that you do.

4. There is always something to learn

Like with many other career pathways there is always something to learn if you pursue a career in Human Resources. Most people will start with a Certificate IV or a Diploma in Human Resources and work their way up. But you may also complete a degree in Business or Commerce majoring in HR if you so choose. Completing an HR course with is a great way to learn more about your field while you are still working. You can study online in your own time, rather than face-to-face. Even people who have been in the field for a number of years may find that they need to complete another short course in HR management to learn more about new developments in the industry. So, there is always something to learn for those who want to upskill and learn more about their field.  

There are many things that you should know before you start a career in HR. However, if you have a passion for helping out others in the workplace and you have a gift for managing people, you should consider a career in Human Resources.

There are always jobs available in this field to those who are qualified, so if you are thinking about becoming an HR manager one day, start studying as soon as you can.
