Are you one of the six in ten workers in the UK feeling unhappy in your job? Or maybe you’re just looking for something more rewarding?

Move it or Lose it are offering a training course that leads on to a truly flexible and rewarding job teaching exercise to the over 60s.

This isn’t your typical exercise session; there’s no lycra, no embarrassment and no gym equipment. This is called FABS which stands for Flexibility, Aerobic, Balance and Strength and is delivered with a healthy dose of fun and laughter in community settings where everyone is welcome.

Laura, aged 40 from Harrow, took the plunge to do the training course and change her career. As a television producer, Laura worked long hours with lots of travelling. After having her children, she knew she needed to find a different kind of job that would fit in with the kids but wasn’t sure what to do. She searched high and low but just couldn’t find the right thing.

She noticed that there were lots of opportunities to work with toddlers and young children, but very little was available for the older generation. With a soft spot for older people, Laura widened her search.

“If someone had suggested I’d be a fitness instructor a year ago I would have laughed, it would never have entered my head. But when I found Move it or Lose it through a Google search I just knew it was the right thing for me.”

After taking the course, which involves eLearning done at your own convenience and two days of practical training, Laura now runs her own classes and loves being her own boss.

“It ticks every box for me; it’s flexible and works really well round school time, it’s incredibly rewarding and I feel that I’m actually giving something back too,” she says.

Julie Robinson, Founder of Move it or Lose it, told us: “We have found this really suits women aged 40 plus as they have the right social skills and empathy to make their classes welcoming, fun and effective. There’s no need to have any fitness qualifications as we give you all the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to become a FABS instructor. It’s also a great way to earn well from a part-time role that fits around other commitments.”

An ageing population

There are 14 million people over 60 in the UK and the ageing population continues to soar, but healthspan isn’t keeping pace with lifespan with many people spending the last 12 years of life in ill health. As much of this is due to inactivity, there’s a desperate need to keeping people moving more (and sitting less) as they age.

The solution is simple – bring people together to do easy exercises and socialise in a non-threatening environment in their local communities. Not only does this improve physical and mental health and wellbeing, it reduces loneliness, which has been shown to be as damaging as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Move it or Lose it are on a mission to change the way we age by training 1,000 specialist instructors to work in community, care and health settings. It provides jobs, brings communities together and reduces the burden on NHS budgets too. What’s not to like?

Laura is now looking forward to this new phase of her life, “I am so excited about my new job and it’s great to be part of a team knowing that you are making a difference to peoples’ lives. I only wish I’d done it years ago!”
