Henpicked’s book of the month for September 2018…
We are so grateful to Misia, our book club member, for the superb recommendation for August’s book of the month, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. Thank you from all of us, we absolutely devoured it. It deserves the phenomenal feedback and is the type of story that stays with you long after you’ve finished it.
If you haven’t shared your thoughts yet, please do let us know what you thought of it and join in the conversation at the bottom of the article on Disqus. What did you think of it? Would you recommend it to a friend?
This month’s book has been recommended by Suzanne Banks. £20 Amazon voucher on the way. Thank you to everyone else for their suggestions – some great ones which may turn up on other months, in fact we should probably send out a list – we spent ages looking through them. Please keep the suggestions coming in.
We’ve chosen The Bear and The Nightingale by Katherine Arden because it’s completely different from anything we’ve read before. Full of magic and fantasy:
“Beautiful literary fairytale…incredibly lyrical prose…a joy to read. Arden opens her imagination wide and succeeds in transporting the reader to an evocative world…with a heroine it’s impossible not to love…” (Stylist)
“Wonderfully inventive” (Heat Magazine)
“Arden’s debut novel has the cadence of a beautiful fairy tale but is darker and more lyrical. The novel is deceptively simple, but its characters and plot are sophisticated and complex. Arden explores what happens when fear and ignorance whip people into a furore, and how society can be persuaded to act against its own interests so easily. It’s a rather apt tale for our times.” (Washington Post)
We hope you enjoy it!
