Henpicked’s book of the month for August 2017…
Our July choice Island of Secrets by Patricia Wilson was a good summer read, with it’s sunny Cretan location, and book club members loved the WWII historical detail and the evocative description of the Greek island.
However, though some of us loved it others weren’t so keen; as always we had an honest discussion and aired our different thoughts! And it’s not too late to add your own comments at the bottom of the page.
A huge thank you to our book champions and to the Henpicked community for their comments and reviews. If you have any further thoughts please drop them into Disqus at the bottom of the article.
So, our book of the month is A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson. It’s a Costa Novel Winner and here’s what they say about the author ‘Few will dispute that it proves once again that Kate Atkinson is one of the most exceptional novelists of our age.’
Here’s what reviewers said:
“Better than most fiction you’ll read this year…Atkinson’s prose is as bright as gunfire in the Second World War sections…I can’t think of any writer to match her ability to grasp a period in the past. No, not even you, Booker-winning Hilary Mantel.” (The Times)
“Horribly funny…every page has some vividly original phrase … nothing can quite account for the imaginative leaps she has made.” (Standard)
So, let’s see just how dazzling it is!
